La opinión mayoritaria es que el Yorkshire Terrier es el producto de la combinación de terrier escoceses e ingleses, que se produjo cuando una parte de la población de Escocia se vio desplazada debido a la Revolución Industrial y se asentaron en Inglaterra y que evolucionaron en los campos y los hogares de los siervos, los artesanos y los tejedores de Yorkshire, el mayor condado de Inglaterra.
A los siervos no se les permitía en Inglaterra tener perros cazadores. Sólo estaban autorizados a tener perros pequeños, que se utili
zaban principalmente a la caza de ratas y otras alimañas, se puede decir que entre los primeros criadores de Yorkshire Terrier se encuentran los trabajadores de las industrias textiles y laneras, que a menudo y sin darse cuenta, acariciaban con las manos sucias de lanolina a los pequeños Yorkis, lo cual aceleraba el crecimiento del pelo mejorando su brillo y sedosidad. La gente de Yorkshire se dio cuenta enseguida del valor de este nuevo y espléndido Terrier, y su valor comercial aumentó en proporción a una demanda creciente. En 1866, el Kennel Club inglés, que apenas había sido creado, reconoció la existencia propia de esta raza y le dio el nombre de Yorkshire Terrier. En la época victoriana fue muy codiciado el Yorki pequeñísimo y por ello su talla se redujo de manera notable
Entre las razas que han dado lugar al Yorkshire Terrier se incluyen el Waterside Terrier, el Clydesdale Terrier y el Paisley Terrier. La influencia escocesa viene dada por el Scottish Terrier, el West Highland White Terrier, el Cairn Terrier y el Skye Terrier…
Cairn Terrier Los historiadores de las razas terrier definen al Cairn como el más antiguo de su estirpe. El Reino Unido es el origen de la raza Cairn Terrier. La raza apareció en la época del asentamiento de los romanos en Caledonia, Escocia. Los nativos del lugar marcaban los bordes de sus granjas y enterraban a sus muertos en montes dónde hacían unos pilones de pequeñas piedras que recibían el nombre de Cairn. De ahí viene el nombre de este perro. Allí se alojaban pequeñas alimañas y, para cazar estos animales, se creó en el siglo XVI una raza baja y de pelo duro

Waterside Terrier, que ha sido descrito como un perro pequeño de pelaje largo, generalmente de color grisáceo (gris azulado), con un peso entre 3 y 9 kilogramos, pero habitualmente, alrededor de 4,5 kilogramos

El Clydesdale Terrier. También llamado Paisley Terrier aun cuando esta raza ya no existe, la descripción de su colorido se asemeja al azul acero y canela del YORKSHIRE TERRIER actual. Esta raza de compañía, pequeña y fuerte, aparece en primer lugar en las comunidades mineras de las orillas del río Clyde en Escocia.

El Manchester Terrier, este pequeño terrier de pelo liso y con una larga cola era en una época utilizado para la caza del conejo
y en la lucha contra los roedores.
Este perro toma el nombre de la ciudad de Manchester, donde en una época estaban muy de moda las competiciones de caza de ratas en “cuadriláteros” adecuados, en los cuales se soltaban algunos centenares de ratas que, en tiempo récord, eran muertas por el Manchester terrier. En aquel tiempo, las orejas de estos singulares cazadores eran amputadas para evitar que fueran desgarradas por los roedores que con frecuencia, en un desesperado esfuerzo para sobrevivir, se enfrentaban a los perros.

Scottish Terrier Creado en Escocia (país al cual debe su nombre) en el año 1700, y resultado del cruce del Aberdeen Terrier con otros perros de madriguera de patas cortas (posiblemente con el Cairn). En su país de origen fue pronto apreciado por su robustez y su firmeza de carácter, características ambas que propiciaron su difusión por toda Europa
Scottish Terrier
El West Highland White Terrier. Procedente de los escarpados parajes y rocosos de las tierras altas del oeste de Escocia, se les apreciaba porque eran perros de caza pequeños, capaces de perseguir a la presa (zorros, gatos monteses y tejones) entre las rocas y de entrar en sus madrigueras. Tenían pelo duro y capa de lana que les protegía de las más severas condiciones climáticas. Eran valientes y robustos, podían cazar en solitario o en grupo, ya que se sabían hacer respetar entre sus congéneres y evitar peleas innecesarias.
West Highland White Terrier
Skye Terrier. A principios del siglo XVII, una nave española naufragó al chocar con los escollos de la isla de Skye, en Escocia. Entre los supervivientes había unos perros Malteses, que se cruzaron con Terrier locales, y de aquel modo dieron origen a la nueva raza. Como todos los Terrier el Skye ha sido un perro de caza en madriguera.

Aunque es imposible incluir los nombres de todos los perros y sus criadores hicieron posible la extensión de lo que hoy conocemos como yorkshire terrier, es conveniente que se conozca lo que constituye el principio del pedigree de la raza, en el que participaron con una gran relevancia dos criadoras.
Huddersfield Ben . Es considerado el padre de la raza, nacido en 1865 y murió en 1871. Criado por W. Eastwood Huddersfield, nació del apareamiento de una madre y su hijo y sentó las bases de lo que se convertiría en el Yorkshire Terrier Moderno

El pedigree de este pequeño muestra el adecuado uso de la “crianza en línea” y está considerado uno de los primeros sementales que más influyeron transmitiendo su talla y excelente tipo a una descendencia de gran calidad. A pesar de su muerte temprana con 6 años y medio se ha considerado el “padre de la raza” y es curioso observar que el Yorki que ostenta el record de CC´s en Gran Bretaña con 52 en su haber Ch. Ozmilion Dedication tiene a Huddersfield Ben exactamente 29 generaciones por detrás en su pedigree.

Muchos excelentes ejemplares obtenían notables resultados en las exposiciones de entonces. Toy Smart, Champion Ted, Halifax Marvel, Bradford Marie, son todos nombres que serán siempre recordados en la historia de la raza como sobresalientes ejemplos de su raza.
El criadero de Mrs. M Crookshank en Escocia fue el hogar de muchos campeones. Ch. Tufly, Int. Ch. Mr. Pim, Ch. Medium, Ch. Myrtle, Ch. Pipit, Ch. Pimbron y Ch. Minerva que llevaban el afijo Johnstounburn . La campeona Minerva fue presentada por Mrs. Mary Lowrie después de la muerte de Mrs. Crookshank en 1960. El Campeón Internacional Mr. Pim of Johnstounburn es el mejor semental después de la Guerra y su hija Prism of Johnstounburn es la perra madre de múltiples Campeones Ingleses de después de la Guerra Mundial, El Campeón Internacional Mr. Pim era un perro muy pequeño de alrededor de 1,2 kilos y debido a eso solo fue cruzado con 30 a lo largo de su vida. Era el producto de un cruce entre familiares directos que aseguraba su la calidad de su descendencia, de un excelente dorado y un oscuro azul acero, manteniendo su color bien entrado en años, consecuentemente Mr. Pim fue padre de cachorros con uno u otro de los dos tonos y que poseían su refinamiento, con sus exquisitas características faciales tan buscadas por la raza en ese tiempo.
Mrs. Annie Swan había criado y presentado Yorkies desde los años 20 con considerable éxito con varios campeones que incluían al ganador de 14 CCs, Ch. Invencible. Mrs. Jean Hopwood, una respetada figura del mundo del perro por entonces, persuadió a Mrs. Swan para que se adoptase un afijo y de esta manera usando el nombre de su famoso campeón, el Criadero Invincia comenzó su contribución a la historia de la raza.

t y Ch. Gudasgold proporcionaron prestigio al criadero Invincia pero la línea más influyente vino de Ch. Invencible su hijo Ch. Delite of Invincia, su hijo Invincia Masher y Ch. Splendour of invincia ganador de 17 CCs. Gran parte del éxito de Mrs. Swan se debió a su dedicación y amor a la raza, y su criadero era alabado por el maravilloso color de sus perros. De hecho, el color y estructura de los perros de ambas era excelente destacando sobre el resto y el actual Estándar del Yorkshire Terrier debe mucho a los programas de cría de Mrs. Swan y Mrs. Crookshank.
La fusión de estos dos criaderos establecidos pero sin relación entre sí, Invincia y Johnstounburn ocurrió en el Criadero Pagnell en Yorkshire, sus propietarios Mr. y Mrs. Vic Groom compraron a Prism of Johnstounburn como perra de cría a Mrs. Crookshank y esta perra fue cruzada con Ch. Burgwallis´ Little Nip que a su vez era nieto de Ch. Splendour of Invincia. Esta unión produjo una pareja de futuros campeones, la hija Ch. Pagnell Prima Donna of Wiske que tuvo el honor de ser el primer Yorkshire Terrier en ganar un Best In Show en una exposición general para todas las razas y un hijo vendido y registrado con el afijo de su nuevo propietario Burgwallis Vikki que se hizo campeón en 1960 un año más tarde que su hermana.
Cuatro años más tarde de este cruce original se volvió a repetir y produjo otro famoso perro para el criadero Pagnell, Ch. Pagnell Peter Pan que logró la reserva de CC en Crufts en 1963 con solo 13 meses, al año siguiente ganó la raza en Crufts y como su hermana de anterior camada llegó a ganar un Best In Show en una exposición de todas razas. Desafortunadamente no pudo ser utilizado como semental mucho tiempo pues fue exportado a Japón pero produjo unos excelentes cachorros que heredaron las características de su padre. Uno de sus hijos fue Ch. Pagnell Blue Peter que alcanzó su título en 1967, otro fue Lambsgrove Pinnochio que fue exportado a U.S.A. donde se hizo campeón. Los dos hijos más famosos de Ch. Pagnell Peter Pan fueron Ch. Heavenly Blue of Wiske padre a su vez de otro campeón y Ch. Beechrise Superb propiedad de Les y Hilda Griffith que alcanzó su título en 1966 y que fue a su vez padre de 7 campeones entre ellos Ch. Blairsville Aristocrat. Estos dos magníficos hijos de Ch. Pagnell Peter Pan heredaron la marcada dominancia de su padre y proyectaron su calidad a través de su propia descendencia a las futuras generaciones.

zaban principalmente a la caza de ratas y otras alimañas, se puede decir que entre los primeros criadores de Yorkshire Terrier se encuentran los trabajadores de las industrias textiles y laneras, que a menudo y sin darse cuenta, acariciaban con las manos sucias de lanolina a los pequeños Yorkis, lo cual aceleraba el crecimiento del pelo mejorando su brillo y sedosidad. La gente de Yorkshire se dio cuenta enseguida del valor de este nuevo y espléndido Terrier, y su valor comercial aumentó en proporción a una demanda creciente. En 1866, el Kennel Club inglés, que apenas había sido creado, reconoció la existencia propia de esta raza y le dio el nombre de Yorkshire Terrier. En la época victoriana fue muy codiciado el Yorki pequeñísimo y por ello su talla se redujo de manera notable 
y en la lucha contra los roedores.
